Rail

Northumberland County offers more rail-served commercial sites than any other Central Pennsylvania location. If your company location criteria include rail access, there are rail-served site options to suit virtually any need.

And Northumberland County is served by two of the best rail service providers in the business: Norfolk Southern and North Shore Railroad.

North Shore Railroad is an employee-owned short-line railroad that consistently achieves highest quality and service rankings from its customers and the industry for its exceptional on-time delivery and customer service records. North Shore Railroad is consistently highly rated among the nation’s highest short-line railroads.

Norfolk Southern is one of the nation’s leading first-class carriers, and additionally provides direct service to customers adjacent to their main lines, which run both north-south and east-west along Northumberland County.

The North Shore/Norfolk Southern switchyard is conveniently located in the Borough of Northumberland just 10 minutes from northern Northumberland County industrial sites and approximately 35 minutes from easternmost sites in the county. Transloading facilities in Coal Township (current) and Point Township (planned) provide additional truck-to-rail options.

North Shore Railroad’s service capacities were severely put to the test during construction of Panda Power’s Hummel Station gas generation facility, successfully completing  over 20 heavy haul deliveries of mammoth and critical turbine and generator components to the construction site, all on-time and without incident.
